Aveeno Stress Relief Moisturizing Lotion Ingredients

Below is a list of ingredients found in the current product I am reviewing.  I give a little bit of information about each product and whether it is naturally or synthetically produced.

Water- Water is used in nearly all beauty products.  Companies must use what is known as process water (free of toxins).

Glycerin- This is a natural ingredient that is a by product of soap making.  It is known to draw moisture into your skin.

Distearyldimonium chloride- It was difficult to find a lot of information about this ingredient, but from what I could find, (sorry for the scientific language) this is a synthetically created product that is made with positive charges and are meant to react with the negative charged proteins on your skin so that the product lays on the skin and gives your skin a smooth feel.  It has been known to irritate sensitive skin.

Alcohol- I was surprised to see this in a moisturizing product, because alcohol has a drying effect.  After doing some research, it seems that alcohol is added to make a product less greasy.

Dimethicone- This is a synthetically based product which is silicone based and is used for conditioning.  This product has been approved by the FDA for use in beauty products.

Avena sativa (oat) kernel flour- This is Aveeno’s signature ingredient made by grinding oats into a fine powder.

Sodium chloride- This is table salt.  It is used in lotions to make the product thicker by soaking up some of the water in the product.

Benzyl alcohol- This is a liquid that occurs naturally in some foods and plants, but is also created synthetically.  It is used as a preservative.

Fragrance- This is anything natural or synthetic added to the product that gives the product a pleasant smell.

In regards to the ingredients, the product lives up to Aveeno’s philosophy that it is a mixture of new and natural ingredients.  I would say that it is a mid range product as it is a pretty good balance of natural and synthetic products.  I’ll continue to look for products with a larger amount of natural ingredients as it seems that synthetically produced ingredients carry more risk of creating skin irritations.  I am also aware by looking at the ingredients the leniencies that companies have with labeling.  Consider the last two ingredients: Benzyl alcohol and Fragrance, these occur both from natural and synthetic products, but companies do not have to say where these ingredients originate from. Most of the time synthetic products are used because they are cheaper.  I’ll report back in about a week to let you know what I though overall of the product.

  1. i think most 'natural' products you can purchase at a mega-mart are going to all have some degree of ingredients such as alcohol...it is unfortunate, and while other more natural products can be used for the same effect, keeping cost down is high on the priorities. i learned this from a masseuse at a spa i like. i LOVED the products she used on my skin, but there is no way i can afford to use them on a regular basis. she is the one who explained to me WHY the products cost so much more than say, neutrogena or aveeno.
